Shopping Al Fresco: The Allure of the Farmer’s Market

Produce never sleeps. Or is it rust? Regardless, even though it’s almost September, the Hailey and Ketchum Farmer’s Markets peddle their goodies through October. The Market is a great place to grab your weekly produce (think vine-ripened delectables) and buy one-of-a kind handmade gifts for friends and family (tuck them away for that last-minute house-warming or birthday gift) or a sweeeet little somethin’ somethin’ for yourself! It’s also a nice departure from your regular dining spots (Calle 77 tacos, arm yourself with plenty of napkins) or dinner to go (a slab o’ ribs or roasted chicken from the Boise BBQ guys).

I’ve actually done all the hard work for you, so following are those "must see" spots at the Ketchum Farmer’s Market:

Kustom Kastles – birdhouses and butterfly houses – I’d never heard of butterfly houses, but these custom made doozies are the real deal and crazy affordable at only $25+.

James the Wood Frame Guy – wooden frames and clocks that are so unique with wood so polished you’d think trees grew shellacked.

Shooting Star Farm – Carol and Dan have fantastic produce—don’t miss their lettuce and tomatoes—excellent fodder for tonight’s salad.

JAM Designs Jewelry – I admit, a bit of self promotion here, however JAM Designs has dozens of earrings and necklaces from which to choose. Prices start at $13 and jewelry features semi-precious gems and Swarovski crystals that accentuate your lovely visage and make you the talk of the town for under 20 bucks! You simply can’t beat it!

Farmer’s markets are the grocery stores of the new millennium. The Hailey Farmer’s Market is every Thursday from 2:30-6:30pm and the Ketchum Farmer’s Market is every Tuesday from 2:30-6:00pm. Come see for yourself and stop by and say hi to JAM on September 6 and 13.
