Award winning American photographer, Jason Langer, is best known for his psychological and noirish visions of contemporary urban life. Jason was this year's recipient of top prize at Madrid Foto 2012.
In Langer's seemingly quiet photographs we pass through darkness to discover forgotten time and romantic plane. Subtle surrealism, seductive ambiance and alluring scenes entice our curiosity. Langer's images promote the viewer to notice the mood and feelings from the constructed shapes and gestures created by the figures in the cityscapes. These abstracted figures in simplified open spaces compel the audience to their own interpretation. Avoiding staged tableaux and the deadpan aesthetic popular in much of contemporary photography today, his images strive always to capture the unanticipated moment, layered with timelessness, drama and dynamism.
Langer worked as an apprentice and printer for some of the Bay Area's most renowned photographers, including Ruth Bernhard, Arthur Tress and Michael Kenna, who became a lifelong mentor and friend.
Jason's newest book, "Possession", from Nazreali Press will be availbale this winter and will be for sale at the gallery. Please contact the gallery for more information. www.gilmancontemporary.com
