Are You Mad for Hats?

Everyone’s fashion wardrobe should include at least one piece of happenin’ headgear. Why, you ask?

Hats are a way to express the unique you. They call for attention and frame your face. They’re dramatic. They’re fun. They’re cool. Hats are easy to buy and easy to wear. They carry loads of fashion punch, come in a dizzying array of color and design choices, and can be worn to dress a look up or down. Hats have mood and personality, as well as a most useful purpose.

There’s a hat that works for everyone. In the winter, hats can help you conserve energy while participating in the numerous winter activities an alpine community has to offer. Hats are warm, an attribute that makes them especially appealing to outdoor enthusiasts who don’t want their ears to freeze. They also provide protection from sun and rain, helping to ward off discomfort and hypothermia. And because the bitter elements of winter can suppress the immune system, a hat may even help prevent you from getting a cold or the flu.

Hats can and should work with (and not against) your style, whether your look is sporty, casual, romantic, bold and dramatic, fun and quirky, sleek and ultra cool, or all-out glam. Tyra McGuffy, a merchandise buyer for Sturtevants in Ketchum, says, “You can own a variety of hats in different styles to work with your fashion looks, while helping to protect yourself from the outdoor elements.” Typically, the winter hats that Sturtevants carries are made out of wool, fleece, or acrylic. Among the store’s best sellers are hats made by local company, Jytte Mau Designs of Hailey. Jytte’s hats come in a variety of styles such as the dome, peak, or racer and can be found in a range of colors and designs, since they are often custom-made for individual stores.

Several local stores sell hats, including Backwoods Mountain Sports, the Board Bin, Formula Sports, The Elephant’s Perch, Kelly Sports, Silver Creek Outfitters, and Sturtevants. So grab a friend, head to one of your favorite stores around town, and have fun trying on loads of different hats and discovering the look you can get from each. There’s a perfect hat to meet your every sporting need, as well as every fashion whim or fancy, and you’re sure to find something you love! It’s all about your personal style and what looks good on you, so YOU decide.
