09/24/12Sun Valley Harvest Festival's Restaurant WalkThis year's Sun Valley Harvest Festival kicked off with the Restaurant Walk (sponsored by Sun Valley Magazine), starting at Ketchum Town Square. This popular event was sold out this year and people were clammoring for tickets until the very last minute. Ninteen restaurants participated this year and the gang at Sun Valley Magazine headed out to try bites at some of Ketchum's best and newest restaurants. Here's a sampling of what we had for dinnner that night. B. Thai-Style Ahi Tuna Poke Rico's Pizza and Pasta Arugula, Tomatoes, Prosciutto and Mozarella Pizza ... |

09/18/12Cloverstone BakeryTen years ago, Colleen Teevin owner of Cloverstone Bakery began developing strange symptoms. She suffered from constant fatigue, arthritis, brain fog and even vertigo, all of which she attributed to a recent trip to South America, so she went to a specialist doctor (well, several doctors) and after two years of examinations and tests, she had no answers. At a dinner party, a friend suggested Colleen examine her diet to try and get to the bottom of things. After removing gluten from her diet, Colleen’s symptoms disappeared within a week. Even touching or breathing gluten caused Colleen’s symptoms to return so working as a pastry chef, which she had done occasionally since starting college, was not an option. Not ready to give up baking, Colleen filled the void of a... |

09/18/12Java Coffee ShopJava Coffee Shop has been a 4th Street staple in downtown Ketchum since 1991, where locals pile in with ski boots, bike helmets, babies and bleary eyes, snaking a line around the counter or out the door to chat with familiar faces and forget that the line is moving on without them. “It’s like a morning bar,” said tatted owner Todd Rippo, running a hand through his shoulder-length hair, where the town gathers during daylight hours to get news, make plans and see people. The “real” center for visiting (if technically not the Visitor’s Center), noted Todd. The slogan to "wake up and live" was born when Rippo tore out of Southern California on a soul-searching, cross-country motorcycle ride and stopped... |

09/18/12The Sawtooth ClubFor more than two decades, The Sawtooth Club has been a place to gather and reconnect with friends. Its warm ambience coupled with its superb location on Main Street in Ketchum make it a no-brainer for locals and visitors alike to meet any day of the week for a tasty meal and a cold drink. I can still remember meeting friends there years ago for drinks and a backgammon game after movies or for a bar bite before going out on the town. So here we are 17 years later, and it would seem that Peter and I keep coming back to the Sawtooth for some reliable and tasty sustenance before going out on the town. We arrive on a Friday night during slack. And despite the slow end of the season, the Sawtooth is in full swing. All the bar tables are full, so we take one in the center of the... 09/18/12The Cellar PubHow best to sum up The Cellar Pub (located at 400 Sun Valley Road) in Ketchum? I would have to start by saying that it is many things to many people. A friendly bar for conversing with chums, a place for a fab dinner (try the Fish and Chips), a game room complete with shuffleboard, and a place to get out of the fray and away from downtown without actually leaving the vicinity. I recently met my friend Colleen there one afternoon for Happy Hour and was “happy” that I did, ha! Our timing could not have been better since it was “Man Night,” the modern day counterpart to “Ladies’ Night,” thereby enabling all lads who crossed the threshold to purchase $2 Bud or Coors, $5 Chili Bombs and $4 Fireball shots Being the nice guy that... 09/18/12Sushi on SecondLast weekend I stepped out of my comfort zone. Forgoing the usual Mexican or pizza that we enjoy on Friday nights, Peter and I decided to shake things up and go out for sushi. After seeing an ad for summer specials (advertising works!) at Sushi on Second (260 Second Ave. Ketchum), we sealed the deal and made reservations. We were seated at the busy sushi bar, where two sushi chefs were hard at work making beautiful rice and fish creations for a captive audience and busy restaurant. We ordered Japanese beer to start things off— Sapporo for me and Asahi (both were $6.50 for a 22 oz bottle) for Peter. After scanning the appetizer list with items like Popcorn Shrimp ($7) and Crispy Trout (also $7) we decided on Potstickers ($10). I’d been craving them for weeks and was... 08/07/12River GrubThe Sunbeam Village Grill, (SBV) owned and operated by Shannon Orr of Ketchum is a little piece of civilization found out there in the midst of the wilderness. Snuggled up against the road in the thick of Sunbeam Village at 100 Yankee Fork Road, SBV Grill neighbors White Otter Outdoor Adventures, a river outfitter which runs float trips down the Sunbeam Stretch of the Salmon. The SBV Grill provides satisfying sustenance after a float that is albeit beautiful, at a half day, long enough to make your stomach growl. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., mid June through Labor Day, the SBV Grill serves hungry patrons lunch and dinner in its quaint dining room, big enough for the whole family, yet intimate enough for you and your kayaking date. The deck was my... Posted at 08:48 AM | Permalink | Comments: 1 |

07/12/12Tranquility Tea HouseNestled in the yellow house on Washington Ave across from Lefty’s is Tranquility Teahouse, a café with a mind toward wellness—and my newest find in Ketchum. Opened in December of 2012, (artfully planned on 12/12/12) this crazy-cozy restaurant is many things to many people. To me, it’s a fabulous late lunch spot conveniently open from 8am to 9pm in the summer, 11-5 on Sunday. Peter and I are always on the lookout for a new lunch venues for our Saturday late lunches which come after a much deserved late sleep and hike. Our options are few and far between around tea time, so I was thrilled to find them open in the late afternoon and in addition to tea, serving excellent beer, wine and food. Tranquility has reinvented itself with a... Posted at 11:57 AM | Permalink | Comments: 2 |

06/14/12Trail Creek CabinLast week, in my world at least, Facebook rose to the occasion. I spied a coupon for a free appetizer at Trail Creek Cabin (they are also currently featuring sensibly priced 2 for $20 entrees!) and snagged it immediately. And thus my on-going love-hate relationship with Facebook tipped the scales in the direction of love for a brief moment. So last weekend, Peter and I set off in the direction of dinner at Trail Creek Cabin. We’ve never dined there and were excited to experience a slice of Sun Valley history. We arrived at dusk and the dining room was packed. Seated at a window table with views of Baldy, we got a sneak peak at the initial preparations for a wedding the next day, tents and all. I silently yearned to get married again—just to have my wedding... Posted at 12:44 PM | Permalink | Comments: 3 |

06/05/12dashiFor anyone who hasn't yet tried this wonderful little gem, it’s not to late. dashi (located at 220 East Avenue) recently celebrated its first year in business and has already established itself as one of Ketchum’s most original and unique eateries. dashi opened in May of 2011 by chef and owner Tyler Stokes and the food, much like the atmosphere, is incredibly fresh, modern and clean. The menu focuses on Asian inspired cuisine, combined with a modern American twist—and the outcome couldn’t be more exciting. dashi’s menu is inspired by the seasons and combined with the creativity and spontaneity of the chef, the menu is ever-changing, using only the freshest seafood, meats and produce. No matter how many times I eat here, I always get the same... Posted at 12:32 PM | Permalink | Comments: 2 |
