10/11/11Mama InezIn 1994, I had the best job EVER. I worked at Mama Inez in Ketchum—one of the best Mexican restaurants the Valley has ever known. I made lasting friendships, learned a lot about the restaurant business and ate killer Mexican food (although my friends will say I only ate beans, salsa, lettuce and tomato). When I heard that Mama’s was back in business on Main Street in Ketchum this fall, I swear I heard a resounding “Yippie!” throughout the Valley. Owners Duane and Deida Runswick have done a fantastic job replicating the food (to the tee!) that we locals crave, while also giving the place a bit of their own flair and personality. Located at 210 N. Main in Ketchum, Mama’s new home is a quirky space that they ingeniously revamped into a cozy... Posted at 07:17 AM | Permalink | Comments: 7 |

09/20/11three-TEN-mainIf the Wood River Valley had a “Top Chef” competition, Derek Gallegos (owner and chef at three-TEN-main) would surely be the last chef standing. This guy is a lover of food as well as a veritable scientist in the kitchen. Example: Tomato water topped with basil foam in a shot glass. BASIL FOAM??? Seriously? Who comes up with that? One of the most famous chefs in the world—Ferran Adria of elBulli in Spain, that’s who. He’s the guy who earned three stars in the Guide Michelin and is held in high esteem for deconstructing food into tiny bites of wonderment. So when Peter and I headed to Hailey for dinner, we had no idea what three-TEN-main held in store, but we knew we were in for an adventure. But before I divulge the delicious details of our evening I... Posted at 12:16 AM | Permalink | Comments: 5 |

08/16/11Big Wood GrillWhen my BFF Jody said she’d come up from Boise to see Rickie Lee Jones with me, we immediately began dialoguing about dinner. (Priorities, right?) New restaurant names were thrown about like celebrities and old staples made the mix as well. We happily settled on the Big Wood Grill (located on the Big Wood Golf Course off of Saddle Road). I love the Big Wood Grill’s location for two reasons. No. 1 is a no brainer: the phenomenal deck and its views of Baldy, the Boulders and Galena Peak—there isn’t bad table in the place — an all-al fresco dining experience with plenty of shade for those warmer afternoons. No. 2: When Peter and I decided to live together oh so long ago, our first apartment was at the Alpenrose, where the Big Wood Grill stands today. The... Posted at 04:01 AM | Permalink | Comments: 4 |

08/09/11Michel's ChristianiaMick Jagger knew what he was talking about when he wrote, “Time waits for no one and it won’t wait for me.” So, when a certain milestone birthday came along a few days ago, I thought it deserved a milestone celebration. Since I’m not 21 anymore, table dancing at Whiskey’s seemed silly. (Although we did head to the Casino after dinner to continue our celebration.) Instead, I decided to go old-school all the way. No trendy martini bars or reservations at the new, hip spot—we wanted to celebrate in a classic, Sun Valley style. Walking home one evening on Sun Valley Road, Michel’s Christiania beckoned with its sparkling lights and gurgling fountain. The walls of the Christiania are lined with photos of Michel Rudigoz (owner) as coach to the U.S.... Posted at 03:53 AM | Permalink | Comments: 5 |

07/26/11DiVine is DivineHailey’s come a long way baby. I remember when dining out meant choosing from a Mexican restaurant, a Thai place, or a burger joint. Times sure have changed (for the better) and it seems that Hailey has a variety of top-notch eateries. On a day out to lunch we chose a cozy wine bar aptly named “DiVine.”Our party of six arrived for lunch at DiVine around 1pm and we snagged a large coffee table in the middle of the room, surrounded by plush leather couches, comfy chairs and sturdy benches. Our uber efficient waiter Sam arrived immediately with water, menus and a smile. We perused the wine-by-the-glass menu and decided upon wine to celebrate my upcoming birthday. Yay me! Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc and a Lagunitas Pilsner beer were ordered , briefly admired and quickly... 07/07/11Perry's RestaurantA lot of things have changed in Ketchum in the last 15 years. Luckily, Perry’s Restaurant isn’t one of them. Owned by Keith and Paula Perry, the restaurant (located on the corner of 4th Street and 1st Avenue, Ketchum) celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, officially a Ketchum institution and top ten tourist destination. I always think of Perry’s first when I want a deli-style sandwich or a salad. But it’s much more than just a great lunch spot. It’s also a place to get breakfast on a lazy weekend. Peter and I are often seeking late lunch venues on Saturday afternoons. We like to sleep in, go for a bike ride, play tennis or take a long hike and treat ourselves to a lovely “linner” afterward. On one such day, we found ourselves at... Posted at 05:08 AM | Permalink | Comments: 4 |

06/30/11Rhubarb-a-RebopLanding in a rental home in Hailey this year has me clinging to the little sparks of joy capable of warming an un-owned home: blooming lilac bushes along the side yard, an ancient apple tree full of fruit potential, good light on the garden area, and so on.The resident crow population could quiet their traps on occasion, but curious neighbor children add a welcome distraction from the tunnel vision of life without our own little ones. The seven-year-old knocked on our door recently, eager to trot his friend through to the backyard and show off the chicken coop we threw together over the last week. This was a vast change in mannerism from our typical backyard fence interactions involving lipstick ‘bombs’ and similarly launched items. The coop necessitated formal... 06/01/11Making the Best of BBQ RainoutsLike most people, we had planned to enjoy a long-weekend of dinners with friends. And then life came along to remind us that whatever expectations rode silently yet inherently in this planning, we were not to be satisfied. Sun? Denied. Temperatures exceeding 60 degrees? Outright guffaws.Just when the weather had us down, we took a stab at a break in the rainy curtain. Donning rain jacket and trading flipflops for socks and shoes we braved a neighborhood walk. Fresh air, in such a state of mind, calls one to the powers of possibility unknown to indoor breathing. The hint of sage on the humid airwaves further propels visions, the crystalline freshness of spring rain invigorating one to the whole potential of mankind.Several blocks pass underfoot, the greening hills shrouded in early... |

05/24/11Eating Nawlins-StyleIn hopes of learning about a new city, finding some swinging jazz and filling up on a little down-home southern cooking, my friend Simone Kastner (daughter of CK’s Real Food’s owner and chef Chris Kastner) and I took a weeklong trip to The Big Easy. The trip was my first time being anywhere in the south, and although I thought I had done my New Orleans food research ahead of time, we still managed to make some rookie mistakes but also stumbled upon some amazing eats.New Orleans exemplifies the idea of a “melting pot” on all levels. With Spanish, French, African, Greek, Irish and Native American influences (to list only a few) represented in everything from the architecture and street names to the cultural parades and music, it is no wonder that the food in New... 05/19/11KB's BurritosKB’s Burritos (located at 121 N. Main St, Hailey) is not your typical Mexican food. Don’t come expecting burritos smothered with cheese, or even gooey enchiladas swimming in sauce. Think instead of salads, tacos, burritos and quesadillas loaded with crisp, fresh ingredients. My co-worker Cara and I headed across the street to KB’s on a sunny Sun Valley spring day. Spring, (or maybe summer???) was definitely in the air (or was it our imaginations?). We wanted a warm deck to dine on and we found it at KB’s. KB’s menu is simple: Tacos (fish, shrimp, chicken or steak), quesadillas (chicken, shrimp or cheese), salads (chicken, steak, mahi mahi, shrimp, salmon, chorizo, bacon, egg or tofu) and handheld burritos (chicken, steak, fish or shrimp)....
