04/02/13Sun Valley's Signature CocktailsThe Wood River Valley’s range of nightlife spans everything from swanky and sophisticated to rustic and rugged Old West, all within a matter of a few miles. So whether you’d like to belly up to Mahoney’s Bar in Bellevue with a beer and a shot or shuffle over to Zou 75 in Hailey for some sushi and sake or hit a Ketchum hotspot in your skinny jeans like the glowing bar at Cornerstone for a martini, the Valley has a plethora of signature drinks available for your sipping (or swilling) pleasure. Here are some of our favorites. Boca “El Fuego Dulce” Boca’s Latin-freestyle food and atmosphere are unlike any other bar or restaurant in the Valley. Upon entering the strumming guitar and warm ambience embrace you on a cold winter’s... |

03/12/13Zou 75The crew of Sun Valley magazine gathered at Zou 75 recently for a brainstorming dinner. We've been talking about doing this for awhile and finally set the date and made it happen. Gathering together breaking bread (or sushi rolls), and cajoling over a few drinks is a great way to hold meetings in my opinion. Here’s a snippit of our evening. First, Mike, our fearless editor, and one-liner aficionado was home sick. And for Mike to miss dinner, drinks and an evening out with friends and co-workers, you know he’s reallllly sick. Second, Linda our accountant was sick too. Yikes! For fear of anyone else getting sick, we told her to stay home and we’d miss her. (Blowing kisses from far away). And finally, we were welcoming our new sales manager, Heather Harder... Posted at 12:10 PM | Permalink | Comments: 1 |

03/05/13Hailey Coffee CompanyThe Hailey Coffee Company, located on Main Street and Walnut in Hailey, has (no joke) the freshest coffee in town. “We do all our own roasting,” explained owner Carrie Morgridge. And the roastery, which was located just across the street from the coffee shop, moved to the industrial center in Hailey a few years ago. So instead of the beans travelling a few steps from roaster, to cup, to mouth, they now travel a few blocks. (Like I said… FRESH.) Their organic, micro-batch roasted beans can be found not only at Hailey Coffee Co., in the form of classic Latte Macchiato or Mocha Breve, but all over Idaho. “We do a lot of wholesaling with restaurants in Ketchum, some up in Stanley, grocery stores, a coffee shop in Twin [Falls] and a bed and breakfast in... |

02/19/13The GrinderFor some people, a coffee shop is not just about coffee. Sure, everyone enjoys a ritual morning cup of something steaming, toasty and delicious—a perky "wake-me-up" to start the day off right. But for many, a coffee shop’s roots touch much deeper than that. For Nicola (Nikki) Potts, owner of The Coffee Grinder and Gallery on 4th Street in Ketchum (more commonly “The Grinder”), a real coffee house is “a community center.” She said, “I feel other multinationals have broken away from that idea, but it has to be indigenous to the area, it has to be small and intimate enough that people converse and talk. When you think of European coffee houses, they’re all talking politics or sports or whatever, and we try to keep that... |

02/05/13Valentine's Day DiningValentine’s Day is for lovers (and the chocolate and greeting card industry likes it too). I say, keep the card and the chocolates and let’s go out to dinner. Here’s a list of Sun Valley Magazine’s favorite Valentine’s Day restaurants that will satisfy everyone from the frugal to the finicky, designated in no particular order. Old Fashioned Crispy Skin Duck at Vintage Restaurant. Vintage Restaurant is ridiculously cozy and romantic. With only a handful of tables, it’s the premier spot for lovers to hold hands and linger over dinner and dessert. It’s also actress/producer/director Drew Barrymore’s favorite eatery in the Valley and it’s rumored that her husband proposed to her while dining there.... 01/29/13Muleshoe TavernSometimes you need to take a break from work, just so you can focus more on work. (Isn’t there an inspirational poster with a kitty resting its head on a keyboard quoting that same sentiment?) So last week, SVM’s editor Mike McKenna and I headed out of the office early on a Friday and dropped in at the Muleshoe for an important “meeting.” Once there, we met one of SVM’s freelance writers, Nancy Glick, for an afternoon of appetizers and beer, the ideal prelude to a great weekend. The Muleshoe Tavern (located at 107 S. Main St in Hailey) is housed in the old Red Elephant building. Thankfully, the interior and bar hasn’t changed drastically from the old days, and we found comfort in couches with a view of all the action on Main Street. The long... 01/23/13Knob Hill Inn's Wine and Dine NightIf an event is serving food AND wine, you can generally count me in. So when I saw that Knob Hill was hosting a Wine and Dine Pairing, the proceeds of which would benefit The Advocates, I jumped on board. This was my first time visiting Knob Hill Inn since its renovation last year. I know, I’m a bit behind the 8 ball, but but better late than never! I snagged my wine-partner-in-crime, Colleen, and we set off to try a sampling of vintages from Bookwalter Winery and a taste or two of Knob Hill Inn’s legendary cuisine. We arrived at 4:30 and were escorted to a private room off the dining room, where a long table was set up with glasses, numerous bottles of wine and beautiful plates of food. It was a casual environment that allowed guests to stand or sit while sipping... Posted at 09:06 AM | Permalink | Comments: 4 |
