Whether you are looking to keep up with your New Year's Resolutions or just looking to enjoy the outdoors, from the great grooming on Baldy to some free Nordic Skiing this weekend, you're bound to enjoy some snow somewhere! And if you are already jonesing for bike-riding season, how about a Cyclocross race this weekend to get your fix? Then check out some epic wilderness photos and a backcountry film festival. Who said January is a slow time in the Wood River Valley?!


Spin your legs in January: Cyclocross Race at the Glick’s

It might be January but there’s not better time to get on your bike! This weekend Nancy and Josh Glick are hosting a for-fun only Cyclocross at their backyard course in Bellevue. Come by, spin your legs and join the fun! Then head to Powerhouse for a burger, a beer and to watch the Cross Nationals live in TV! Spectators welcome and encouraged.

Directions:Drive south on HWY 75. Left on Gannett Rd. (Follow for 2 miles.) Left on Griffin Ranch Road. Left on Wyatt. Right on Cooper. Follow through circle to Gus Lane and it's the first house on the Right.

When: Cross race starts Sunday, January 8th, 11:30. Join us at the Powerhouse at 2:15.

Keep your skiing legs in shape: Ski free on all BCRD trails!

Event takes place this Sunday, January 8th, and will offer free skiing all day on the BCRD Nordic Trail System.  This includes: Galena Lodge Trails, the Harriman Trail, The North Fork, Prairie Creek and Billy's Bridge.

When: Sunday, January 8th. All day!
Where: BCRD Trail System including the Galena Lodge Trails, the Harriman Trail, the North Fork, Prairie Creek and Billy’s Bridge.

Galena Lodge: Free Learn to Ski Day!

Every thought of learning how to Nordic ski? This Sunday is Free Learn to Ski Day at the classic and beautiful Galena Lodge.  A free Skate Ski Clinic will be held at 1:00 PM and a free Classic Ski Clinic will be held at 2:30pm. These clinics are about 45 minutes and all levels are welcome.  Not to worry if you don't have your own gear, you can use Galena’s for free during the clinic or rent some for the whole day for just $10.

When: Sunday, January 8th. Skate clinic at 1:00 PM. Classic clinic at 2:30 PM.

The Backcountry Film Festival: A night of grassroots films in Hailey

Join us for a night of entertainment in Hailey! The Backcountry Film Festival is back on Friday and is not to be missed! The Backcountry Film Festival promotes the work of grassroots filmmakers who tell compelling and entertaining stories of backcountry, non-motorized recreation and environmental preservation.

When: Friday, January 6th. Tonight! Doors open at 6:00 PM and the show starts at 7:00 PM.
Where: The Liberty Theater, 110 N. Main Street, Hailey.

Friday night with rockers Finn Riggins at Whiskey’s

Check out local favorite band, now based in Boise, Finn Riggins on Friday night at Whiskey Jacques in Ketchum. Finn Riggins is the result of a longtime collaboration between Cameron Bouiss, Eric Gilbert and Lisa Simpson, who began playing together in college at the University of Idaho. Now, years later they are a nationally touring band with four albums under their belt. Don’t miss them, and an opening crew led by local Cole Wells,this Friday.

Forgotten Wilderness: Matthew Deren's Photographs

Where the wet, Pacific Slope meets the dryer continental inland, a unique ecosystem supports an abundance of wildlife, birds, and plants. Matthew Deren’s photographs dramatically bear witness to mountain lions, bobcats, wolves and black bears in this hidden niche between McCall and Riggins. Sponsored by the Idaho Conservation League.
