Family Fun at the Winter Carnival
Photography by Hailey Tucker
The Winter Family Carnival last Saturday marked the second family-focused event put on by Old Cutter’s and Coldwell Banker Conklin and Co. at the Old Cutter’s Park in Hailey. The carnival was free of cost and boasted contests and games including dog sled races and a sled race obstacle course.
Although Old Cutter’s Fall Festival in October saw almost 100 people throughout the day, attendance at the winter carnival was low. Only a handful of people showed up to play in the snow, snack on cookies and compete for one of the satin blue ribbons Coldwell Banker had printed specially for the event.
Theresa Pemberton, one of the event organizers from Coldwell Banker, said they knew the timing of the festival wasn’t ideal since it overlapped many local schools’ spring breaks. As long as people were having fun, she insisted they weren’t too worried about attendance.
“We wanted to do [the carnival] just to bring people out to the park and have something fun for families to do,” Pemberton said. “It’s just really about having fun.”

And, if fun was the goal, it was achieved. Despite the low attendance, the enthusiasm of those present did not waver. Of the six or so families that came, each participated in almost every event and did so with huge grins from start to finish. Competitors squealed and laughed while trying to race throw the heavy spring snow, and when there were not enough people for some of the planned events, John Campbell, the event coordinator, came up with alternative ideas and quickly put those into action without any hesitation.
“The best part [of the carnival] is, you get to act like you’re 7 again,” Todd Conklin, event organizer, said smiling while watching Campbell’s family dog pile on each other in the snow.

By the end of the carnival, most of the event winners sported their newly acquired ribbons around their necks while sharing stories and helping polish off the snacks Coldwell Banker had provided. Even the cleanup process looked like game when the volunteers began an impromptu javelin toss with the poles racers had previously jumped over and slid under during the obstacle course.
The carnival ended earlier than planned and may not have been exactly what anyone was anticipating, but overall it was an afternoon of family fun, which is all it ever claimed to be.

Pemberton said Old Cutter’s will host their next event before the Fourth of July Parade. She said everyone is welcome to come down to the park for food and games before the parade begins. For more information on Old Cutter’s Park, visit http://oldcutters.com/park.html.
