February rolls into its truncated ending with a weekend full of the sort of culture we best not take for granted in our little Valley. International award-winning films. Live classical music. Even some Marley-style reggae in the mountains. Culture and fun is good for you. Get out there and be healthy!

 


 

The Family of Women Film Festival

Presented by Americans for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Family of Woman film festival (Thursday, Feb. 25 to Sunday, Feb. 28), will raise awareness about the problems—medical, political and social—that women face worldwide. As part of their charter, the UNFPA seeks to empower women through improving their access to and awareness of their reproductive health and human rights. Americans for UNFPA is a registered U.S. charity.

On Thursday, Feb. 25 a fund-raising Cocktail Party will be held at the home of Russ and Gemma Daggatt north of Ketchum, to benefit Americans for UNFPA, which supports the work of the United Nations Population Fund. The event will honor Dr. Aytenfisu and several of the filmmakers. The donation is $200.
 

Films:

The films will all be presented at nexStage Theatre: Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is $15 per film, or $60 for entire package of 5 films.
 

  • FRIDAY, FEB. 26

7 p.m.
"Sari Soldiers" a documentary from Nepal on how women participated on both sides of the revolution. The filmmaker, Julie Bridgman, will be present. “Sari Soldiers” was underwritten by a grant from Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest.
 

  • SATURDAY, FEB. 27

3 p.m.
"Bliss" a drama from Turkey about honor killing.

7 p.m.
"Mrs. Goundo's Daughter," a documentary from Mali about a woman seeking political asylum in the U.S. in order to avoid returning home. If she is sent back to Mali, her 3-year-old daughter will be subjected to the same genital mutilation as she was. The filmmakers will be present. This screening is underwritten by a grant from the Perenchio Family of Ketchum.
 

  • SUNDAY, FEB. 28

3 p.m.
"The Maid," a drama from Chile about a woman in the only legitimate job available to most women in her world. The film was nominated for best film in the recent Golden Globes Award.
 

4:30-6:30 p.m.
Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest will host a reception at the Friesen Gallery honoring Julie Bridgman, filmmaker of "Sari Soldiers.” The Friesen Gallery, 320 First Avenue North, Ketchum.

7 p.m.
"Lemon Tree," a drama from Israel about a Palestinian woman and an Israeli woman. The filmmaker Eran Riklis will be in attendance. This film is underwritten by grants from Wood River Valley residents Ann Down and Bex Wilkinson.
 

Filmmakers from festival will visit with students at Wood River High School, Hemingway Elementary, The Community School and The Sage School.

An Evening of Russian Music

The Sun Valley Winter Artists Series will present an Evening of Russian Music with Peter Henderson and Susan Spelius Dunning performing the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. The show is at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Big Wood, 100 Saddle Road in Ketchum.

Tickets are $35 for general seating and $15 for students. Call 208-725-5807.

 


Marley in the Mountains

Beginning on Friday, Marley in the Mountains, a fundraiser for the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center, will feature an awesome lineup of reggae performers
 

Marley in the Mountains Events:

Friday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m., Karl Denson & His Tiny Universe will perform at Whiskey Jacques’. Entry is $20.


A live outdoor show will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Fourth Street & Second Avenue, in the Simplot lot across from the Ketchum Post Office. The cost is just $5 for a big concert with performers include:

Grammy winner Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band; Raffle Drawing 7:30 p.m. followed by
Michael Rose
in concert from 7:30 to 10 p.m.;
Dancehall with Jamaican Veteran Ken Serious

Lion's Den Sounds
DJ Vision
