Who, What, Where, Now!
Can’t Fool the Youth
There are plenty of documentaries about food these days, but not many created with children in mind.
Tonight, Thursday Feb. 18, Idaho’s Bounty and the Community Library in Ketchum join forces to present “What’s On Your Plate” at 6 (doors open at 5:30). Directed by Catharine Gund, the film features two 11-year-old- Manhattan girls (one of whom is the director’s daughter, Sadie) as they traverse the city on a search to educate themselves and others about what’s actually on our plates. The screening is free and open to all.
“What’s On Your Plate” is fun, charming, smart and accessible for children as young as five and clocks in at just over an hour long. Parents are welcome to attend, plus there will be light refreshments and a reception afterwards with the filmmaker and her daughter.
The documentary’s relevance is obvious from the start. Childhood obesity is at an all time high in America. Medical issues stemming from diets high in saturated fats, corn derivatives and processed foods, such as heart disease and diabetes, are rampant even among children. Experts discuss the many benefits of eating food grown close to your home. Small farms and local food is healthier and fresher, but for many hard to find. The movie shows how, from a child’s point of view, the situation can be handled and perhaps even changed.
