Weekend events feature music, art, motors

Onward we march into August, plump full of festivals, art, music and the vroom of motorized vehicles. While it’s still too early to ponder the richness of the summer of 2009, we can look to Bald Mountain where a massive gondola construction project is underway for inspiration for the coming changing of the seasons. Meanwhile, perk up those ears. The sounds of silence are mountain-bound. In town, it’s all music.

This Weekend:

  • At the Sun Valley Center’s new, but still vacant, lot a wonderful exhibit is being unfurled. There are four 20-foot by 8-foot storage containers that have been transformed into art environments. New exhibits will be displayed from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, during Gallery Walk (www.sunvalleycenter.org). The featured artists are Jan Cox, Amanda Hamilton, Megan Murphy and Angela Tsai, each of whom was given creative license in determining what to do with their spaces. The containers are on The Center’s property at the corner of Second Avenue and Fourth Street in Ketchum, across from the post office. Check out all the galleries in town for this lively Gallery Walk. All the galleries are sporting different styles and genres.
  • Silver Creek Outfitters will present its sixth Annual Boots & Buckles from Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9. The event will feature exquisitely-designed, elegantly-handcrafted, contemporary Western heirlooms. On Friday, Aug 7, the show will open at 10 a.m., and there will be a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. with Southwestern treats, complimentary beer, wine and margaritas. It will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For information call 726-5282 or log on to www.silver-creek.com. Silver Creek Outfitters is located at 500 N. Main St., Ketchum.

The lineup today includes: Billy & Muzzie Braun, Stony LaRue, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Micky and The Motorcars. There are a number of motor-centered activities this weekend as well:

  • The 5B Car Club exhibition will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Roberta McKercher Park in Hailey. For details call Max Monahan at (208)720-4838, or e-mail Monahan at monahanmax@mac.com.

  • Also on Saturday, hundreds of motorcyclists from across southern Idaho will converge on Hailey in a show of support for Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl, who was captured in Afghanastan in early July. Organized by the Pocatello POW/MIA Awareness Rally Association, the event is open to all motorcyclists, motorcycle clubs, riding organizations, motorcycle ministries and nomads (solo riders). The Wood River Fire & Rescue Firefighters’ Association will host a barbecue for the riders and the public at Zaney’s Coffee House in Hailey on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. The party will continue at the Wicked Spud afterward. Proceeds raised at the barbecue will benefit the firefighters’ association, which provides financial assistance to community members in times of need and training support to local firefighters (www.wrfrffa.com). Funds will also be earmarked for any efforts of the Bring Bowe Home campaign.

  • The Ron Johnston Memorial Ride will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9 at Adventure Motorsports in Twin Falls and ride to the Wicked Spud in Hailey. Everyone in any vehicle (or on foot or bicycle) is invited to join in. The entry fee of $15 includes lunch at the Spud and the ride. Lunch only is $10.
