With the onset of mid-July comes the days of wine and roses, hot sun, clean flowing rivers and the climate that makes Idaho such a divine summer spot. As we bound into another week, we can detox a bit and cultivate our children's minds with activities at libraries, schools and bookstores. Then, when you’re feeling suitably edified, get your thirst on for the 28th annual Sun Valley Center Wine Auction, picnic and tasting. sunvalleycenter.org.

 

  • The Community School Summer Lecture Series will begin tonight, Monday, at 7 p.m., with a lecture by Professor Kerry Hunter. His talk on "Questioning Judicial Activism by looking at New Zealand Judicial Review" will be held at The Community School in Sun Valley. The free series is produced jointly by The Community School and College of Idaho.

    Kerry, a professor of political economy at the College of Idaho, was recently in New Zealand on an Idaho Humanities Council grant to research constitutionalism and judicial review.
     
  • Two further lectures will be held in August: Professor John Rember: "Reconstructing a Landscape of Hope" on Aug. 10, and Professor Howard Berger on "The Individual and the Community; Comparing Israeli and American attitudes and customs,” on Aug. 24.   • On Tuesday, Ketch ‘Em Alive will feature The Heaters, one of the greatest bands to come out of southern Idaho in decades. Zumba Dancers will perform at 7 p.m., with the hot main act following at around 7:30 p.m. Picnics are welcome and drinks are sold at the Forest Service Park, at 1st and Washington in Ketchum.
     
  • Citizens for Smart Growth holds their annual Silent Auction and celebration Wednesday, July 22, at the Inn at Ellsworth Estate, at 702 3rd Avenue South, Hailey. The event helps support the organization’s vital work advocating for vibrant communities in balance with nature. This is a nice intimate event at a great locale for a crucial cause. Check out the good work this organization has been doing for the past 12 years.

  •   Event passes are now available for the 32nd annual Northern Rockies Folk Festival at Chapter One in Ketchum, Notes Music in Hailey and online for the first time at www.nrff.net.
