The Dutchman’s Summer Breeches

The Dutchman’s Summer Breeches

Allison Kennedy - Sawtooth Botanical Garden

Fascinating little gems of sensation and surprise abound in the Wood River Valley and its environs these days. In the spring, the hills, riverbeds, trails and meadows are blessed with something quite perfect. If God laughs in flowers, then wildflowers must be the greatest cosmic giggle. They grow in unlikely places, and seem like Tim Burton may have designed and named them: elephant-head, Dutchman’s breeches, heal-all, Joe-pye-weed, shooting star, naked broomrape, monkey-head. Cripey. They sound like a bunch of fine characters you might meet at the local pub.

And in these hot summer days, a visit to the local pub is not a bad idea. But first, get a look at that Wyethia (pictured above). Thanks to record rain in June that kept the blooms fresh, the Sawtooth Botanical Garden will continue its Wildflower Walks through July. (You can visit the pub later.)

Walks begin at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden located at the corner of Highway 75 and Gimlet Road, just south of Ketchum. Bring water, lunch, a pair of binoculars and maybe a notebook to record your finds. But pooches, who tend to trample and/or pee on the very flowers you seek, are, alas, not welcome.

For more information and to register call 725-9358. Or just pop by in time to catch a carpool to the walk site.

Upcoming Sawtooth Botanical Garden Wildflower Walks:

9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2

5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9

9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 16

$8 for members, $12 for non-members.

Also Upcoming at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden: garden and macro photography with Seattle’s Edward Weil from 2-5 p.m. on July 8.

If you feel like doing a nature walk yourself, the wildflowers out Proctor are OUT OF THIS WORLD. So lucky to have them so late in the season . . .

About This Blog

Who, What, Where, Now!

Dana DuGan is always on the search for culture, arts, music and a good time. DuGan has written about just those things for more than a decade in the Wood River Valley for various publications and websites. Most days she can be found in her garden, which happens to have the best view (Carbonate Ridge), or at her laptop in one of the valley's many coffee shops. Both activities connect her to the wider world. Known for a certain New York brashness, she comes by it honestly and means no harm. DuGan is a mother of two sincerely nutty girls, who also believe that “The world belongs to the enthusiast who keeps her cool.”
