The Curious Case of the Bike Valet

The Curious Case of the Bike Valet

Fareed Haque in concert

Some weeks are just like this: Crazy with vibes, mad tunes, or as the kids are saying, "tunage." The apex of the summer season, mid-July literally pops with activities and entertainment. I, for one, am exhausted already.

A few odd summer phrases that have caught my gimlet eye include: “Blind Pilot,” “Bike Valet” and “The Mint.” I include this last because we are led to believe the Bruce Willis-owned, former hot-spot was closed. (It is.) But Hailey musician Piers Lamb keeps insisting on throwing one great concert after another there.

Whoever thought they’d hear the phrase "bike valet" in the funky mining town of Ketchum? And speaking of funky towns, how about Hailey for continuing its drive to be musical capitol of Idaho? (More on Blind Pilot later.)

Tuesday

  • On Tuesday, it’s a girls-rock kind of night. The Mint will present Carrie Rodriguez, who three years ago performed with Chip Taylor for Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Since then she has more than branched–she has sprung--and fully formed as a fiddling star. The very gifted Tift Merritt will open and this stellar line-up could easily be reversed, both performers are so talented. Merritt is a New York-based songwriter by way of South Carolina who simply rocks.

  • Meanwhile in Boise, Moscow, Idaho native Josh Ritter will have a two-night engagement at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 and Wednesday, July 15 at the Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St. Opening the show on Tuesday will be Blind Pilot, the Portland folk-pop duo that became national media darlings after touring the West Coast via bicycle (twice).

Ritter will perform a solo acoustic set accompanied by a string quartet from the Boise Philharmonic on Wednesday, July 15. In ‘08, he performed with the Boston Pops at Boston’s Symphony Hall, the first time a full orchestra had undertaken this singer/songwriter’s music.

Tickets ($24 in advance or $26 day of show, $40 for both) available at the Record Exchange, Boise Co-op and the Egyptian Theatre in Boise at (208) 387-1273; joshritter.com or musicfromstanley.com.

  • On Tuesday at Ketch ‘em Alive, a man that has continued to wow audiences in the states (and at least twice in Ketchum): Fareed Haque. As it is Bastille Day, one feels the need to quaff Bordeaux, enjoy baguettes and cheese and wear bleu, blanc et rouge a la Francais. Viva les amis!

Wednesday

  • Then, 6-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 head to the Back Alley Party at Wicked Spud in Hailey for music with Cosmic Beans to benefit Camp Rainbow Gold. There will be beer and wine, raffle prizes and a great vibe on the patio. Bring the family and wear Camp Rainbow Gold gear to show your support for the free camp (held each summer north of Ketchum) for Idaho children diagnosed with cancer.

Thursday

  • And looking ahead to Thursday, remember this simple equation: Bike valet + Special sauce = tasty night of music (G. Love) in Elkhorn.

More on the Elkhorn Concert Series on the next Local Buzzed. Stay tuned.
