Tents, Cleats, Skates and Paws

Finding fun in the Wood River Valley in this still-young summer is no sport. It’s all simply laying out there for you to pick and choose. Here’s a yard sale of upcoming weekend ideas:

The Wood River Land Trust and the Environmental Resource Center will host the Great American Backyard Campout, Saturday, June 26. Grab the kids, sleeping bags and flashlights for a night of adventure in Hailey. After the fun and games, at dusk, families will venture back to their own backyards to create what the ERC hopes will be a new summer tradition, camping out. Oh heck—just try it. So what if the kitchen is only a few steps away and the loo is conveniently handy? Kids love the adventure of it all. The pre-party is free, but advance registration is required. Contact the ERC at 726-4333 or visit www.ercsv.org.

On Saturday, June 27, check out the World Cup Soccer Tournament 2009. Hosted by the valley's multi-cultural center, La Alianza, this is a wild day of lively activities. It will go from 10:30-7 p.m. at Atkinsons Park in Ketchum. Watch the games, enjoy the food, and participate in activities including aerobics, zumba dance, raffles, volleyball, piñatas and more. For details visit LaAlianzaIdaho.org or 578-5408.

The Opening Night of the 2009 Sun Valley Summer Ice Shows is Saturday, June 27. The featured performer will be Joseph Sabovcik, a one-time Olympic Bronze Medalist and two-time European Champion. He’s hot, he spins and boy does that guy jump. Guests may join the “Ice Show & Dessert buffet,” on the Sun Room Terrace or plop down in the bleacher seats (bring a cushion, and a blanket! Seriously). All shows begin at dusk. Complete your Sun Valley experience by having dinner at one of Sun Valley's great restaurants prior to the show. Ice Shows are every Saturday evening through Sept. 5. For tickets and information go to https://seats.sunvalley.com/online or call 888-622-2108 or 622-2135 or visit the recreation office in the Sun Valley Village.

And, as part of Paws at Iconoclast, the Ketchum book store will host artist Theodore Waddell in a reading of  his charming children's book “Tucker Gets Tuckered” at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27. During the month of June: Mention that you are a friend of the Animal Shelter and Iconoclast will donate a portion of your sale back to the ASWRV. The Animal Shelter’s annual “Dog Days of Summer” benefit will be 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the Trail Creek Pavilion in Sun Valley.

About This Blog

Who, What, Where, Now!

Dana DuGan is always on the search for culture, arts, music and a good time. DuGan has written about just those things for more than a decade in the Wood River Valley for various publications and websites. Most days she can be found in her garden, which happens to have the best view (Carbonate Ridge), or at her laptop in one of the valley's many coffee shops. Both activities connect her to the wider world. Known for a certain New York brashness, she comes by it honestly and means no harm. DuGan is a mother of two sincerely nutty girls, who also believe that “The world belongs to the enthusiast who keeps her cool.”
