Mark Kurlansky

The week began with rain in the Valley, but snow dusting the tops of our canyon walls. This bodes well for our spring skiing and water table and all that, but we here in sunny Sun Valley have issues with dismal skies, so don't be surprised if people are a bit grumpier than usual. The only cure is to get out there and expand the mind, to play and dance. This week the deadline approaches (Friday, April 2) to enter Hailey's Just Bag It! call for artists. For more information contact Tracy Anderson at 788-4221, or visit www.cityofhailey.com.

The Company of Fools invite all to its annual Fools Day Celebration, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre, in Hailey. As well there will be the announcement on the Fools’ 15th season.

Iconoclast Books will host award-winning author Mark Kurlansky at The Community Library in Ketchum. He will discuss his newest release, “The Eastern Stars—How Baseball Changed the Dominican Town of San Pedro de Macorís.” 6-7 p.m.

And how I wish I could be there. The book delves into the amazing but small community of San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic. Some 79 Major League baseball players as well as countless minor leaguers have emerged from this town. While baseball stands as the base, Kurlansky also weaves in stories of how such success affects an entire family in this struggling Caribbean town.

In a starred review, Publishers Weekly wrote: "As he has done so masterfully in his earlier bestselling books on cod, salt, and oysters, Kurlansky homes in on a singular subject and magnifies its every facet under the brilliant light of his investigative reporting, his historical sensibility, and his lively storytelling."

Kurlanksy's previous books include, "Food Of A Younger Land," “The Basque History Of The World,” “Salt,” “Cod,” “The Big Oyster,” “Non-Violence” and more.
