04/03/13The RosiesDemands from family, work, friends, church and a million other things strain our resources, especially time and money, making us choose wisely where we invest them. For women who have more time than money, The Rosies, a local volunteer group, seamlessly combines socializing with friends, meeting new people, and giving back to our community. Just over a year ago, in February 2012, Kat Vanden Hueval held the first meeting of The Rosies in her living room. “It was an idea I had had for a while after leaving the YMCA when I had my second child,” said Kat. “I decided to give it a go. The idea was to get a group of ladies together and give time while learning about different organizations in the Valley, and having fun doing it.” This is the kind of thing Kat... |

04/01/13Boarder Profile: Chase Josey and Ryan RoemerTorn apart by high schools but brought together by a mutual love of fresh pow and pro snowboarder Travis Rice, the Sun Valley bromance of the decade remains as solid as ever. Rippers Ryan “Rome-dome” Roemer and Chase “Bakey” Josey, both 17, of the Sun Valley Snowboard Team, can still finish each other’s sentences. “I can’t even remember when we met—wayyyy back,” said Roemer, flicking his head to knock back shaggy brown hair. “Maybe ... kindergarten?” finished Josey, glancing at Roemer with a raised eyebrow. “We’re bros, fer sure,” they both nodded. Often confused for one another, or even as being the same person, “It’s never just Chase or just Ryan, it’s always Chase and... |

03/27/13Shredding on SledsThere are many ways to get out and enjoy the winter wonderland that we call home. Lots of attention is given to skiing and snowshoeing, but what about sledding? Not snowmobiles—I’m talking good old-fashioned sleds. They are both affordable and tons of fun. Here’s how to have a memorable day shredding on sleds in and around Sun Valley. One of the many awesome things about sledding is that anyone can do it. Young, old, in shape, out of shape, it doesn’t matter. It’s about having a great time in the great outdoors with great people. Call your bros. Call your neighbors. Call your cousins. Call your best friend’s uncle’s mother. Call everyone you know. The more the merrier. Head for the hills! Any hill will do. Some people need look no... |

03/20/13Sun Valley Film FestivalSun Valley is no stranger to stardom. This ski resort was made famous by the rich and glamorous, the movers and shakers and beautiful faces of the of the 1940s big screen. Actors and actresses like Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and Marylin Monroe came in big sunglasses and scarves to pose with ski poles and pursed lips on the slopes of Bald Mountain—Hollywood A-listers in search of a quiet found only in the mountains. Sun Valley even starred in a few films itself, like the 1941 “Sun Valley Serenade” and Clint Eastwood’s “Pale Rider,” establishing a cinematic tradition for this place since its inception. Last weekend was no different—producers, screenwriters, filmmakers and a slew of Hollywood’s finest ascended on the Wood River... |

03/14/13Author Tim O'Brien Talks WarAs part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Home Front Exhibition Series, author Tim O’Brien came to the Church of the Big Wood on Wednesday, March 13 to speak to a packed house of eager fans (and one ex-girlfriend). “I want to do a good job tonight, if not for you guys, then for her,” he joked. A homegrown Minnesota boy, O’Brien is now the winner of the National Book Award, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction and has been translated into 20 different languages and sold over 3 million copies of his books worldwide. Fair enough to say he’s a big deal. Although he is known mainly for his war stories in novels like The Things They Carried, he said during his lecture that “To talk... |
