Less Trick, More Treats

Less Trick, More Treats

Every animal deserves a treat for Halloween. But remember that many of your favorite foods can be harmful to your pets. Chocolate, for example, contains a chemical called theobromine, which acts as both a diuretic and a cardiac stimulant. It may do wonders for humans, but dogs and cats are not so lucky. In fact, if ingested in large amounts, chocolate can sometimes cause a fatal reaction. So instead of doling out your extra Snickers bar to your furry friend, try something a little less spooky, like these pet-friendly recipes.

Pumpkin Bites (for pups)

   2 eggs

  ½ cup canned pumpkin

  ½ teaspoon salt

  2 tablespoons dry milk

2 ½ cups wheat flour or rice flour

  water

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Blend eggs and pumpkin together; add salt, dry milk, and flour. Add water as needed to make the dough somewhat workable. Drop small spoonfuls onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Salmon Snacks (for kitties)

6 ounce can of salmon (undrained)

1 cup cornmeal

1 c flour

1/3 cup water

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Measure all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly with your hands. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into treat sized pieces. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden.
