08/17/11Renting With PetsIn shelters nationwide, moving is the number one reason people relinquish their pets.Shelters are seeing this trend now more than ever, with homes being foreclosed on and the rental market getting stiff. Like many others these days, I recently found that I needed to move, and while the thought of relinquishing my pets is certainly not an option, I recognize the challenges people face in this process.Locally, we are quite lucky compared to some other rental markets. Many rentals are pet friendly, and some don’t even require a separate pet deposit. 07/27/11Shelter Dogs: Dispelling the MythsThere are a few misconceptions about shelter animals that make me a bit nutty. In order to dispel some of these myths, and preserve my sanity, here are a few that top the list:Misconception #1: All shelter animals are there because they are bad or have behavioral problems. The reality is that most animals are surrendered to the shelter because people simply cannot keep them anymore. This can be for a variety of reasons, from financial trouble because of the economy to a move that forces them to give up their pets. Most of the dogs and cats we get in turn out to be wonderful pets for their new adopters. People are typically devastated to give them up, and often times we are shocked at how well behaved the pets are! While we do get some animals that need special homes or some behavior... |

06/15/11Making a Lifelong Love Connection: Adopting a DogWhen I adopted my first shelter dog, I went in blind. I had no breed preference and no real idea of what I was looking for. I had grown up with all sorts of mutts, and while I knew I wanted a large to medium size dog, I didn’t know much else.I walked the hallway, looking at all the homeless dogs and ended up pulling the cage cards of three, hoping that after meeting them I would know who was right for me. One was a Boxer; I wasn’t able to meet him because he was on a bite hold (I really know how to pick ‘em huh?). One was a Beagle, who spent our entire time together sniffing the room and totally ignoring me, but man was he cute. And the third was a German Shepherd mix. She sat at my feet calmly and allowed me to gently pet her.I returned the next day eager to adopt the... Posted at 02:23 AM | Permalink | Comments: 1 |

06/08/11Keeping Unwanted Pets Out of your GardenThis weekend a little bunny spent his mornings munching on the clover grass in our front yard. The dogs stood at the window for hours so upset that they couldn’t chase this little creature away. In this Valley, we have lots of undomesticated and uninvited pets in our yards. They can range from raccoons, skunks, foxes, elk, deer, bunnies and bears, to name a few! The big question is, how to keep these animals out of your newly planted vegetable gardens. Lucky for me, our garden has even sprouted one green leaf. I’m great with animals but vegetables are a challenge! There are lots of at-home remedies that green thumbs swear by all over… 1. Place bacon grease around the outside of your veggie garden and the rabbits will stay away2. Put mothballs around the plants3.... Posted at 10:28 AM | Permalink | Comments: 1 |

06/02/11So Much More Than a ShelterMost people know the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley as the place to adopt a pet. (In fact, you can check out www.animalshelterwrv.org if you’d like to adopt a pet right now!) Most people also know it is the place to take a pet you’ve found whose owner you can’t seem to locate. We even act as a place to relinquish your pet, if you feel you can no longer keep it. Our services, however, go well beyond just housing animals, and there are many other services we provide at no cost for the community. The service I am most proud of, and most actively involved in as a Veterinary Technician, is our no-cost community spay and neuter clinics. Any Blaine County resident can schedule an appointment to have their dog or cat spayed or neutered for free here at the Shelter.... |
